Using Mesquite Powder in Recipes

This ingredient is the simple ground powder made from the sweet seed pods of the mesquite plant. It is traditionally called algorobba.

Chef's Notes:

  • Mesquite has a sweet and nutty flavor, similar to carob.
  • Use this powder in baking, mixed in with other flours for extra sweetness and nutrition.
  • Mesquite adds a wonderful maltiness when added to smoothies and nutmilks.
  • Cacao and mesquite make for a complimentary flavor profile.
  • Mesquite has a strong flavor and can overwhelm a recipe – always start small (1 tsp at a time) and increase as desired.
